Lisa was an incredible support for my son Harley during his final high school year. She met him where he was, respecting and following the plan already in place while also listening to him when he advocated for himself. She went above and beyond to find him additional support and was a true cheerleader throughout his final days of high school. Besides us, his parents, she was one of his biggest supporters. Lisa also advocated tirelessly for his path to graduation, even when it wasn’t the norm for the school or Qatar. We are deeply grateful for her dedication and belief in him.

Growing up in Doha, Qatar, I was surrounded by a vibrant mix of cultures that shaped my perspective on life. However, when my family moved back to Halifax, Nova Scotia, for high school, everything changed. Adjusting from the fast-paced, modern lifestyle of Doha to the quieter, laid-back atmosphere of Halifax gave me the opportunity to slow down and truly explore my interests. It was a pivotal time that helped me uncover what I genuinely wanted to pursue. After graduation, I took two gap years to find my direction. During that time, I gained valuable experience in various fields—I did door-to-door sales, which taught me marketing, customer service, and leadership as I managed a small team. I also volunteered at an autobody and collision repair shop, learning new hands-on skills, and worked in retail in the automotive department. Yet, despite these experiences, I still felt unsure about my next steps. That’s when I connected with Vandelay University Guidance. The consultant I worked with was instrumental in helping me navigate this confusing period. Through self-assessments focused on my interests, personality, and career exploration, along with one-on-one mentoring and counseling, I gained clarity. She guided me toward a career path I hadn’t considered seriously before—autobody and collision repair—and helped me apply to Nova Scotia Community College in Halifax. This decision felt like a natural fit. Halifax is a city where tradespeople thrive, and I’ve always admired the pride and craftsmanship they bring to their work. Seeing this up close inspired me to pursue a career in a field where I could work with my hands and create something tangible. Attending high school in Doha, Qatar, was a challenging experience for me. Being placed on an alternative track, I found that the school lacked the necessary supports to fully meet my educational needs, leaving me uncertain about my post-secondary options. Thankfully, my journey took a positive turn when I was mentored by Mrs. Elisabeth during my senior year. I had several CBT coaching sessions with Lisa. I had been struggling with some guilt and negative emotions related to a difficult time with my daughter. Lisa worked through my version of the experience & helped me to re-frame it in a positive light. She guided me in developing some concrete and practical strategies to return to the positive aspect of the experience versus the negative. Lisa also helped me develop a grounding technique to prepare for future difficult situations or "in-the-moment" stressful scenarios.
